Description
Spartan General by Andrea Mazzocchetti
An artwork inspired by the figure of a powerful Spartan general. These were elite elements of the strong and legendary Spartan army, the greatest example of war art in the ancient world. It is still valued today for its ethics and its moral rigor: those who were military in Sparta had to be an example for the community. In the heyday of Sparta (between the sixth and fourth centuries BC), it was said that "a Spartan soldier was worth many more men than any other army". The strength of the Spartan army was essentially founded on the system of alliances because the army could not rely only on the limitedness of human resources.
The Spartan army did not fight to conquer, to make loot, to expand its territory (also because it would not have had the strength to control it). Courage was one of the main strengths for the Spartans.
The Spartan army was mainly composed of the hoplites (infantry units, more common than ancient Greece), they were equipped with spears (dory), short swords (xiphos) and a bronze circular shield (oplon) many Greek poleis inserted into their own armies of the distinctive traits, in order to distinguish their soldiers from those of another poleis, those of the Spartans were: the tunic (chiton), the crimson mantle (tribune), the letter lambda (Λ) used as a political / military symbol, which referred to the first name of the city Lacedemon and which was painted on Spartan shields, and long hair. For the Spartans the long hair symbolized the free man, they also provided a slight protection against cuts of the neck. In the archaic period, the Spartans were equipped with bronze armor and a helmet, usually a Corinthian helmet. Spartan hoplites were often represented with a ridge on the helmet (probably a symbol used to identify officers).
