Description
Mig 29 - 02 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 is a Russian air superiority fighter, originally Soviet, produced by Mikoyan-Gurevich. Bimotore with great performances, it is limited only by the scarce autonomy. The project was started in the early seventies and entered service in 1983 in the Soviet Air Force. Exported to numerous countries, it is currently in service in various air forces. The navalized version, MiG-29K is in service at the Indian Navy.
The MiG-29 arrived online too late to participate in the Cold War and other major conflicts, and this implies that it has not had the opportunity to demonstrate its potential. The problems of "maturation" related to the various subsystems of the aircraft and the methodologies of employment have done nothing but amplify the difficulties. The machine reached Iraq only at the end of the First Gulf War and the only result that one of the first Iraqi MiG-29s obtained was to destroy one of his mates by mistake by mistaking it for an F-14 Tomcat. A similar thing seems to have occurred also during the operation Desert Storm; at the time only two squadrons were equipped with about 40 fighters. However, the operation was still low, and in the situation of complete aerial and tactical superiority of the U.S. Air Force were shot down in significant numbers without getting successes. After that war they were gradually put on the ground because the maintenance was too difficult to carry out under embargo.
