Description
F-14 Tomcat - 15
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, twin-engine, supersonic jet fighter aircraft with variable geometry wings. Developed in the United States of America in the late 1960s, the aircraft was born in response to the United States Navy Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program that followed the collapse of the General Dynamics / Grumman F-111B project.
The F-14 (whose name "Tomcat", in English male cat, is the last representative of the illustrious "feline" name of Grumman's military airplanes) flew for the first time in December 1970 and became operational in 1974 with the US Navy, on board the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the F-4 Phantom II. Embarked on an aircraft carrier, the F-14 operated with the US Navy as the main air superiority fighter, interceptor fighter for naval fleet defense and as a tactical reconnaissance platform. In the nineties he was added the possibility of embarking the pod Low Altitude Navigation and Infrared Targeting for Night (LANTIRN) and began to operate as a ground attack aircraft.
The F-14 was withdrawn from the US active service on September 22, 2006 and was replaced by the F / A-18E / F Super Hornet. In 2015, the F-14 is operational only with Niru-ye Havayi-ye Artesh-e Jomhuri-ye Eslami-and Iran, Iran's Air Force, where it was exported in 1976 when that country still maintained good diplomatic relations with the United States. Of the original 79 units delivered in 1976, 20-25 units remain in service, all updated to the F-14M version. Equipped with radars (with greater vocation for attack) and armaments of Russian derivation, the Iranians intend to keep it in service until 2030.
