Description
Houston Skyline - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
In August 1836 two New York real estate entrepreneurs, Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, purchased 6,642 acres (26.88 kmĀ²) of land along the Buffalo Bayou with the intention of founding a city. Houston is the name that the Allen brothers decided to give to the city in honor of Sam Houston. Before the civil war there were many slaves who lived in the city. Some of them worked in sugar and cotton plantations, while most held domestic and artisan roles. Houston was incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837, with James S. Holman as the first mayor. In the same year, Houston became the county seat of Harrisburg (now Harris County) and the provisional capital of the Republic of Texas. In 1840 a chamber of commerce was established, partly to promote the water transport of the newly created port at Buffalo Bayou.
