Description
Hawker Tempest - 06 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Hawker Tempest, evolution of the previous Typhoon, was a monoplane and single-engine fighter-bomber designed by the British aeronautical company Hawker Aircraft and used mainly by the Royal Air Force; made with different engines, entered service during the Second World War and remained in the air forces departments of India and Pakistan until the second half of the fifties.
While the Hawker and the RAF were struggling with the development problems highlighted by the Typhoon, as early as March 1940, Sydney Camm and his team considered reworking the project focusing in particular on the revised wing, considered the main cause the unsatisfactory high-altitude performance of the new fighter.
In the new project, which at the time had the designation Hawker P. 1012 [N 1] (or Typhoon II), it was studied the use of a new wing with laminar flow profile, the same solution that the technicians of the US North American Aviation they were considering for their P-51 Mustang project.
According to the indications provided by the Air Fighting Development Unit, unit under the control of the RAF Fighter Command and the Air Ministry in charge of carrying out comparative tests in order to develop and define effective combat tactics against the enemy, the first departments equipped with the Tempest were among those who had previously used the Typhoon, in order to facilitate the intoduction in service of the new model.
The first deliveries concerned the specimens of the Mk.V series and began in January 1944; the first fully operational departments were N ° 486 (Royal New Zealand Air Force department in the RAF) and N ° 3 Squadron, in the last days of April. The first operational missions were the same as those already assigned to the Typhoon, in particular against enemy supply lines, while in the rare cases of air combat the Tempest proved to be able to prevail against any opponent, so much that some believe that only the inexperience of the British pilots has allowed some successes to the Bf 109 and the Fw 190 enemies.
