Nashville is the capital of the state of Tennessee and is located on the banks of the Cumberland River in Davidson County, in the north-central part of the state. It is one of the most important centers for music, for the healthcare, publishing and transport industries.
Nashville was founded in 1779 by some explorers headed by James Robertson and James Donelson. It was named in honor of Francis Nash, a North Carolina brigade general who died two years earlier at the Battle of Germantown during the American Revolutionary War. Due to its strategic location along the Cumberland River, the settlement grew easily. In 1806 Nashville was recognized as a city and was proclaimed the county seat. Finally, in 1843, it was proclaimed the capital of the state of Tennessee.
