Description
Malaga, Cathedral - 02
The Cathedral of the Incarnation of Málaga (Spanish: Catedral de la Encarnación de Málaga) is one of the most important Renaissance monuments in Andalusia. In 1855 it was awarded the title of minor basilica.
Located in the historic center just a short distance from the port and the hill of Gibralfaro, the cathedral stands out in the city landscape with its large volume. However, it remains unfinished as regards the southern bell tower, which is why it is affectionately nicknamed by the inhabitants La Manquita
The history of the building, which stands on the site of an ancient mosque (of which only the orange patio remains), is somewhat troubled: begun in 1528 on a project by Spanish architects Pedro López, Diego de Siloé and Diego de Vergara, the the cathedral was inaugurated in 1588 but due to the ambitious project the works continued slowly until the earthquake of 1680, which seriously damaged it. The construction was resumed in 1719 and interrupted again in 1783, leaving the unfinished project from that moment on.
