F-14 Tomcat - 18
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, twin-engine, supersonic jet fighter aircraft with variable geometry wings. Developed in the United States of America in the late 1960s, the aircraft was born in response to the United States Navy Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program that followed the collapse of the General Dynamics / Grumman F-111B project.
The F-14 (whose name "Tomcat", in English male cat, is the last representative of the illustrious "feline" name of Grumman's military airplanes) flew for the first time in December 1970 and became operational in 1974 with the US Navy, on board the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the F-4 Phantom II. Embarked on an aircraft carrier, the F-14 operated with the US Navy as the main air superiority fighter, interceptor fighter for naval fleet defense and as a tactical reconnaissance platform.
