Description
New York, Manhattan Bridge - 02 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River in New York, linking Lower Manhattan (Canal Street) with Brooklyn (Flatbush Avenue). The largest span measures 451 m, with 983 m long suspension cables. The total length of the structure is 2.089 m.
It was the last of the three suspension bridges built on the East River after the Brooklyn Bridge and the Williamsburg bridge.
Open to the public on December 31, 1909, it will be completed in 1912. It was designed by engineer Leon Moisseiff, who later also designed the Tacoma Bridge.
The bridge is structured on two levels: on the upper there are 4 road lanes (2 for each direction), on the lower there are three road lanes (all in the direction of Manhattan), 4 underground tracks, a pedestrian lane and a bicycle lane.
This bridge also appears in the movie poster of "Once upon a time in America", taken from Washington Street.
