Description
Streets of Italy - Guardiagrele Cathedral by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Guardiagrele is an Italian town of 9,092 inhabitants in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo. It is home to the Majella National Park and is part of the mountain community of Maielletta.
The territory was inhabited since the protohistoric Guardiagrele, as shown by some archaeological finds. It was later inhabited by Italics and Romans.
What we see in the photo is The Cathedral of Guardiagrele or Collegiate of Santa Maria Maggiore located in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore.
Is characterized by an elegant stone facade that earned the city the definition of "city of stone" by Gabriele D'Annunzio's The Triumph of Death. In the facade of the cathedral is incorporated a massive bell tower that dominates the architecture of the monument.
The major changes to the cathedral, which made it as we see it today, dates back to the fourteenth century, when were built the bell tower and the north portico.
