Description
Seville, Torre del Oro - 03
The Torre del Oro, in Spanish: Torre del Oro, is a military control tower, consisting of twelve sides, which stands on the riverside of Seville, Spain.
It was built by order of the Caliph of the Almohads (dynasty that reigned over the Maghreb and Islamic Spain) Abu Ya'qub Yusuf II to control the access of the city from the river Guadalquivir.
This tower was connected by the wall of Seville to another minor tower, the Torre de la Plata, octagonal in shape.
The tower consists of three sections. The first, twelve-sided, was built between 1220 and 1221 by the Almohad governor of Seville, Abu l-'Ala Idris al-Ma'mun. The second, also a dodecagonal, was built by Peter I of Castile in the fourteenth century. The third section, cylindrical in shape crowned by a dome, was built in 1760 by the military engineer Sebastian Van der Borcht, who designed the Royal Tobacco Factory.
The tower was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1931 and has been restored several times. In the contemporary age it was restored in 1900, between 1991 and 1992, in 1995 and 2005. In its restoration the work of the Spanish Navy was important. It is in good condition and houses the Naval Museum of Seville.
