María Santísima de la Esperanza Macarena Coronada, popularly known as the Esperanza Macarena or, simply, the Macarena, is worshiped in the Macarena basilica, located in the Sevillan neighborhood of San Gil. She is popularly known as the Queen, Lady and Virgin of Seville because of her great devotion and fervor that awakens among the people of Seville. Is celebrated by the catholic church the day 18 of December.
It is a candlestick carving made in the seventeenth century by an anonymous author, although it has been attributed to various sculptors related to Pedro Roldan's workshop, among which his daughter La Roldana stands out. It was canonically crowned in 1964, becoming the second image of Seville to obtain this dignity, preceded by the Virgen de la Amargura.
She enjoys great popularity, not only in Seville, but also in many Spanish cities, as well as in different countries of Europe, America and Asia, where there are several copies of this Marian image, standing out as the oldest one that the Brotherhood of the Gran Poder y Esperanza Macarena de Madrid, resident in the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidro, where a copy of Jesus of the Great Power of Seville is also venerated.
