The church of Santa Cruz is a Catholic church completed in the eighteenth century, between the seventeenth century and the nineteenth century was the church of the convent of the Holy Spirit, of minor clerics. At present it is the seat of the parish of this name.
It is located on Mateos Gago street in the Santa Cruz neighborhood of Seville (Andalusia, Spain). It has another access through the Plaza de la Escuela de Cristo.
It is the headquarters of the Brotherhood of Santa Cruz.
This neighborhood was the old Jewish quarter of Seville. In the places where the old synagogues were, the churches of San Bartolomé, Santa María la Blanca and Santa Cruz were built. The church of Santa Cruz was built in 1391, by order of the town council during the reign of Enrique III de Castilla and it also became an auxiliary building of the cathedral sanctuary. In 1682 Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was buried in this church. In 1810 the French invasion of Seville took place. The French closed the church of Santa Cruz to carry out urban reforms in the area. In 1811 the parish was moved to the church of the convent of the Holy Spirit, which had been exclaustrated in 1810. After the expulsion of the French, there was the return of the monks to the convent in 1813. In 1814 the parish moved to the Church of the Hospital of the Venerable Priests.
The demolition of the old church of Santa Cruz took place in May 1814, in the place of the Mayer.
The convent of the Holy Spirit was disentailed in 1835. In 1840 the parish was moved to the temple of the old convent.
In 1904 was founded in this parish the Illustrious and Old Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Peace, Fervorous Brotherhood of Nazarenes of the Most Holy Christ of Mercy, Santa Maria de la Antigua and Our Lady of Sorrows, known as Brotherhood of Saint Cross.
