It has a height of 24 meters, and with the base and the cross reaches 36.50 m.
It was built at the time of the Pharaohs Ramesses II and Seti I (XIII century BC) and placed in the temple of the Sun of Heliopolis in Egypt; it was taken at the behest of Ottaviano Augusto in Rome in 10 BC. along with the obelisk of Montecitorio, and placed on the spine of the Circus Maximus, followed three centuries later by the Lateran obelisk.
It was found in 1587 broken in three pieces together with the Lateran obelisk, and erected by order of Pope Sixtus V by Domenico Fontana in 1589.
In 1823 Giuseppe Valadier adorned it with a base with four circular basins and as many stone lions, of Egyptian style.
