Rome and the Vatican City - 05 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Vatican City, officially Vatican City State, also commonly referred to as simply the Vatican, is an independent city-state of Europe. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world both by population (605 inhabitants) and by territorial extension (0.44 km²), but the latter at the same time places the State in third place in the world by population density.
The Vatican City State was born on 11 February 1929 following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between Benito Mussolini and Pietro Gasparri, respectively representatives of the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See. The Vatican City is an enclave in the territory of the Italian Republic inserted in the urban fabric of the city of Rome. In the state there is a regime of absolute theocratic elective monarchy of patrimonial type, headed by the pope of the Catholic Church. The official language is Italian, while Latin is the official language of the Holy See.
