Description
Mustang P51D - 26
The P-51D was a low-wing, all-metal, single-seater and single-engine monoplane (except for the P-82 bi-fuselage derivative), with cross-hatches and a retractable rear tricycle. The wing with a frontal dihedral of 5 ° was characterized by the use, for the first time on an operating plane, of the new low resistance wing profiles, called laminar, obtained by moving the maximum thickness of the profile towards the exit edge. Constructively, each semiflate, bilongherone, was on 21 ribs, and both were connected to the central trunk of the fuselage by front bolting, going to make up the floor of the driver's cockpit with their backs. Each wing was equipped with a completely metal ailerons, fitted with dynamically balanced counterbalances and aerodynamically balanced spoilers, with flaps that could be lowered to an inclination of 50 °. The fuselage was divided into three sections, connected to each other with bolts, and which constituted the engine section, the central section and the rear section. The central section on four side members, connected to the four-bolt wing, extended from the engine bulkhead to the end of the ventral radiator. It contained the driver's cockpit, a fuel tank, battery and radio equipment, oxygen tanks for high-altitude flight and coolant and lubricant radiators, intubated in the ventral radiator. The cart was a large carriageway with wheels 0.685 meters in diameter, while the rear wheel had a diameter of 0.312 meters. The front legs retracted into the belly of the wing, rotating towards the center line of the aircraft. The right leg of the cart was equipped with a landing light.
