Description
Monument valley - Watercolor 07 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Monument Valley is a plateau of fluvial origin located on the border between Utah and Arizona characterized by "erosion witnesses", or rocky spiers famous all over the world as an icon of the West.
The guides are provided only by the Navajo Indian populations who have earned those lands and you can find areas to sleep with caravans and campers always managed by the Indians.
Monument Valley is one of the symbols of the western United States. The desert plateau is actually of fluvial origin (Colorado Plateau) and is located on the border between Utah and Arizona in a fairly isolated as extensive area that is more than 70 km from the nearest town: Kayenta. The road that leads to Monument Valley in the terminal is equally famous: it follows a straight path in slight descent that gives the traveler the impression of descending into the valley. In the Monument Valley there still lives a tribe of Indians.
The main road that leads to the place is Highway 163. The territory is mostly flat except for the fact that the plain is sprinkled with a kind of spiers (geologically defined as "erosion witnesses"), called butte or mesas depending on their shape . These natural buildings formed of rock and sand are shaped like reddish towers (caused by iron oxide) with the flat top more or less horizontal; at the base accumulate debris composed of gravel and sand.
Occasionally torrential rains are unleashed in the valley, some areas could flood in a few minutes causing damage to tourists.
