Description
Ayrton Senna - 52 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Ayrton Senna was a Brazilian car driver, three times Formula 1 world champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991.
Considered by many the strongest Formula 1 driver of all time, he combined the ability to push his car to the limit with great sensitivity in the development and choice of tires. He died following a tragic accident in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Following this he became the only world champion to perish during a Formula One race (Jochen Rindt, the only other world champion to lose his life during a race weekend, perished during the Monza GP tests of 1970).
Ayrton Senna has started in 161 GP (out of 162 participations), catching 41 victories (35 McLaren and 6 Lotus), 65 pole positions (46 McLaren, 16 Lotus and 3 Williams), 19 fastest laps (15 McLaren, 3 Lotus and 1 Toleman), 7 Hat Trick (6 McLaren and 1 Lotus), in competition and 610 valid world points (out of 614 total). He started 87 times in the front row and scored 96 points positions, 80 of them on the podium, covering 13672 km at the head of a race, namely 2931 laps. Memorable and full of pathos were his victories commented by the famous Brazilian commentator Galvão Bueno, who had a genuine predilection for Ayrton. Galvão himself commented live and with great emotion, the race in which Ayrton lost his life for the Brazilian television network Rede Globo.
After the tragic accident, all the Formula 1 circuits were subject to checks and subsequent revisions of the tracks, where necessary, to ensure greater safety for the pilots. The Tamburello curve, in this case, was modified and, in the central part, replaced with a variant. Measures were taken, both immediate and long-term, to increase the safety of the cars and reduce their speed, so that after the accident of Senna for 21 years there were no more fatal accidents in Formula 1, up to the Grand Prix of the Japan 2014, during which Jules Bianchi crashed into a crane at the edge of the track to remove a damaged car. Coming into a coma, the Italian-French driver then died on 18 July 2015.
