Description
Autumn in New England - 03 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
New England is a region of the United States of America located in the northeastern part of the country and together with the Middle Atlantic it forms the census region of the Northeast.
New England was the first region in the United States to define its own identity. Originally inhabited by native populations, at the beginning of the seventeenth century began to receive the Pilgrim Fathers, especially belonging to English religious minorities, who fled from religious persecution in Europe. In the eighteenth century, those of New England were the first British colonies in North America to develop plans for independence from the English Crown, even if the region opposed the 1812 war against the United Kingdom. During the nineteenth century New England played a basic role in the abolition of slavery in the United States, was the cradle of American literature and philosophy and the first place in North America where the effects of the industrial revolution were manifested.
To refer to an inhabitant of New England in English the terms New Englander and Yankee are used.
