Description
An old windmill - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The windmill is a structure built to exploit the energy of wind (wind energy) and through the use of shovels to transform it into mechanical energy (or kinetic energy) that can be used for agricultural, craft and industrial purposes or processes. Centuries ago, windmills were used to grind grain, pump water, or both. Most modern mills use turbines to generate electricity or pumps to pump water and drain the soil or extract water from the subsoil.
The windmill originated in Persia about 3,000 years before Christ, although according to other sources it was invented around the seventh century AD. in the Sistan region, today in Afghanistan. It was supported by structures raised on the tower of a castle or on top of a hill; the upper chamber housed the millstones, the lower one housed the rotor. In the past it was used among other things to produce flour.
Windmills have been very important in water lifting in the Netherlands (since 1180) and in England before the invention of the steam engine.
In the nineteenth century in the United States a windmill was devised to take water from a well for irrigation purposes; this solution was then spread all over the world because it was simple and effective.
